Curse of Chucky Gets A Release Date!

Frightfest have just announced they will hold the European premiere of the latest Child's Play film, Curse of Chucky. Damn exciting! I'm a very big Child's Play fan and can't wait for the next plastic-headed horror trip. The film is a more straight horror film than the previous two installments, which is reportedly ignored and follows on from Child's Play 3 as a more direct sequel.

Cannibal Holocaust: The Secret Behind The Lost Piranha Scene

Cannibal Holocaust is a notorious film for many many reasons, and has quite an intense and sordid history as it is. Adding to it has been a lot of Chinese whispers around a scene, allegedly removed, only existing as the above still. In a film about cannibalism, full of sexual violence and animal cruelty, there has been a sadistic cherry on top for a lot of horror fans; the piranha scene.

This has been relatively well clarified in the internet age, though there does still seem to be some fuzzy information about this scene. Was it too gruesome for the film? Was it released in more obscure countries? Is it really just something so sick that the true story will shiver you to your core? The answer to all of these are no.

I kind of long for the pre-information age days when rumours like this could spread and add to the notoriety. But here's the facts, right from director Ruggero Deodato's mouth. First, here is a slightly different still:

The basic story is there was a scene in the script that called for the Ya̧nomamö cutting off the leg of a Shamatari warrior and feeding him to the piranha in the river. Welp, they prepared the shot, but their underwater camera wasn't working, so they couldn't get an underwater feeding frenzy shot they wanted. Anyway, they trudged on, set up for the shot and coaxed some of the fishies to bite by using very bloody pork on the leg. When they raised the leg out of the water, they got this:

If you're not quite sure what I'm pointing out, it is the little ovals on the left leg. Those are the piranha. They hung from the meat, motionless, boring and ineffective. Ruggero abandoned the concept because he felt it really just didn't work.

It's unclear if the stills above are from the film camera or a publicity shot from a stills camera. I would wager it's publicity. To put rumours to rest, the scene exists in no prints of the film, and it is highly unlikely anything was shot for the scene, possibly bar the one angle seen above, due to lame looking piranha, not uncontrollable beasts or any nonsense someone else might try spread.

Shame that there are fewer rumours and myths to expand the legacy of a film, but what am I for if not to ruin your fun?

Horror Lives! Episode 4 - TV LIVES!

Just before the new episode goes up, why don't you have a listen to episode 4, where intrepid explorers Joey, Peter and myself talk about all the horror TV you can shake a rattlesnake at (I'm not sure if that's a lot of shaking, or since the rattlesnake shakes, it is counteracted and not so good, but I think we can all agree they make a good makeshift maraka if you need it).

So please join us, where you will hear natter about current hot programming like Hannibal, The Following, American Horror Story, Bates Motel and The Walking Dead, and some more classic horror shows like American Gothic. Then we go totally down the nostalgia rabbit hole where we hit Are You Afraid Of The Dark? and Goosebumps (incidentally, I started rewatching Goosebumps after the podcast, and it holds up).

Check out the sukka below, or click right HERE (and for the love of god, subscribe to our iTunes!).

Thanksgiving

I've watched this a tonne of times and chances are you may have seen it, but screw it, even if you have, take the few minutes to reacquaint yourself and have a laugh with Eli Roth's fake Grindhouse trailer for Thanksgiving.

And while you're at it, here is a making of. I haven't seen the Thanksgiving trailer in full quality context yet (like on a Blu-ray or whatever), just in the above video, where it is amazing, but the clips of it in the making of below seem somewhat pristine comparatively. Could watching the crappy Youtube cam version, complete with audience members walking by the screen, be the true modern grindhouse way to watch it?

Word is Roth will actually make a proper feature out of this eventually, but he seems to be attached to a ridiculous amount of projects, so let's not hold our breath on that one and instead start the excitement for his cannibal love fest, The Green Inferno, coming soon!

Horror Lives! Episode 3, Where We Talk About ALL THE FILMS

It's that time again (and has been for the last few days); a new Horror Lives! podcast, RIGHT HERE. In this episode, our intrepid explorers talk about pretty much every big horror release from the past few months, for better or for worse, and even have time to look at the apparently cloned trailers for The Purge and You're Next. To be fair, it's easy to have time to talk about so much stuff when you just don't stop talking. But hey, this episode is easily my favourite and if we keep going like this, we're going to be ok (at least that's what the scary man tells me).

In shockingly related news, the podcast is also live on iTunes now, so you Tunesers (that's a thing, right?) can listen and subscribe and get the latest episodes right to your computer doorstep right HERE.

So, please, have a listen, have a laugh, and let us know what you think of... HORROR LIVES!

The Tortured Tries To Take Up The Saw Mantle

My review for the 2010 horror The Tortured has just gone live over at Gorepress.com. Please check it out, comment, share, all those sorts of things people encourage you to do but I am too shy to try push. This one is for those Saw-loving torture porn freaks. Hey, wait, I like Saw... Bill Moseley stars in this one, and we all know that Bill Moseley is amazing. Can the film live up to Bill Moseley's awesomeness?

Hint; it can't.

Check it out HERE.

Pinhead Gets Personal

I stumbled across this little gem today and couldn't help but share. It is some behind the scenes footage from the FX artists on the latter Hellraiser sequels; Deader and Hellworld (with were included in my massive Hellraiser rundown here). Like blondes, FX artists always seem to have more fun, and this video shows that maybe, just maybe, you do have to be slightly unstable to be in that world. The footage wasn't cut together in time for the DVD release of the films, but thankfully here it is on YouTube for any Hellraiser, gore, FX or horror fan to enjoy.

Notable highlight; Pinhead eating pizza.

Horror Lives! The Return of Episode 2, part deux

As Joey, Peter and myself gear up for episode 3, I realise I didn't make noise here about the Empire Strikes Back of our podcast trilogy (or Attack of the Clones, if you have brain damage). What am I yammering on about? Welp, RIGHT HERE, you can hear, in its 90 minute glory, Episode 2 of Horror Lives! In this adventure, we look back on the original big monster flick (well, except for the mountain of ones that came before), Cloverfield, as well as many asides (as we are want to do). Also hear Joey and me talking about our new writings for Gorepress, the gossip on The O'Briens, and giggle when special guest, Ally, falls asleep halfway through recording.

Excitement, thy name is Horror Lives! And you are living right here:

Note: After listening to this, I am becoming aware that I seem to be fitting at least five hours worth of talking in to 90 mins. I wanted to say I was a speed racer, but I'm just not that cool.
